Someone else's music video, starring... us!

On Saturday, Lou Ryan Productions (named after my boyfriend, Lou Ryan) filmed most of the footage we need for a music video of a song by Needless Noise. We don't know what the song is actually called, so we might have to make up a title.

That's right... we filmed a music video and don't even know what the name of the song is! We might know if the band members had actually showed up for the shoot! (Even though B-Gangsta was on Craft Services, starting with blueberry pancakes....)

[ATTENTION: They were not TOLD that we were shooting the video! The explanation is here.]

At least one said he would be here on Saturday with a megaphone, an important prop, but he wasn't and we weren't able to find a megaphone anywhere in town!
` Of all the people to help us out, it was the crazy landlady... though apparently not understanding the significance of micro (small) and mega (big), she instead brought a microphone. Even though they are two very different things we got some good use out of it.

You should have seen the way B-Gangsta rode Lou Ryan down the hallway, screaming and wrapping the cord around his neck!

Of the people who did show up for the shoot were two film guys, Random and Bob, John (as Duct Tape Man), who works at my gym, Matty, our new Lou Ryan Productions team member who knows the band, and of course Lou Ryan, B-Gangsta, and me, as I'd been let go from my job.

It's now being put together by Bob at Pathetic Pictures: You can actually watch a preview/the construction of the video, though filming is incomplete (we were going to shoot some scenes out in the woods but we were stopped by the first snow of the year) so it won't be finished until we do that.

Starring:

Me, as Total Bitch
Lou Ryan, as Traumatized Ex-Boyfriend
B-Gangsta, as Microphone Man (formerly Megaphone Man)
my car as Total Bitch's Car
and our house as Bitch and Traumatized's House.

I really must go (to the gym) now (and probably chat with Duct Tape Man), though I'll mention quickly that; even though the roads were icy, Lou Ryan's mother and her boyfriend did make it up here along the unsalted roads in time for a Mexican fiesta by Iron Chef Gangsta.

And, as a note to certain men... I hope you did enjoy the shower scene!

Surprise! Old Sketches of a Not-My-Family Reunion

` Because I have yet been too lazy (actually, busy!) to post my promised madness, I have since realized that I've also been even lazier for not posting the rest of my old sketchbook posts, which I had started doing almost a year ago, and have only recently been getting back to....
` And so, what do I even recall of the time when I'd drawn this installment? Well, I was eighteen at the time, living in Ohio, starting to get interested in drawing cartoon characters, and really liking the design of Kamek the Magikoopa one day because I had most likely decided to dust off the old Super Nintendo and play some Yoshi's Island.

` This may be confusing from the date, but the dog's head was actually drawn in the August beforehand - I had decided to fill the rest of the page with Kamek in February. (Ha! I bet you weren't expecting that! Exciting plot twists abound! So, blah!)
` Indeed, in August I was most interested in drawing Hooch, who was - at the time - a recent addition to Phil's family... does anyone even remember Phil anymore? He was a Rhodesian Ridgeback (Hooch, not Phil!) and as such I dutifully tried to capture his ridgidiness:

` And, of course, I couldn't possibly miss the characteristic webbidity and longness of his ridgeback toes....

` ...Nor the cuteness of him licking his shoulder! And this was all just before I went along with Hooch's owners to the Scherly family reunion - which happened to be theirs rather than mine, as I had none to go to!
` It was held at a pavillion somewhere between two cornfields, I think, which were apparently filled with evil bunnies, and Gourdy the Yurk, which apparently enjoyed mocking them in Tiny Tim fashion.

` While I was mooching off all the free food, I met this guy named Brad who was a caracature artist. (I apparently drew him 'very lifelike' because he may have said he was 'stuffed'. Or maybe because it wasn't a caracature of him?) We talked a bunch and then Phil joined in, and as I recall I couldn't get a word in after that, so due to boredness I drew a picture of his hand.

` He also drew a picture of my hand, but since I didn't like it well enough, I evidently had cropped it out of the next page.
` Sad to say, though I was being sociable, I was also cowering down a lot among all these people - a sad tragedy for an extrovert like me. I just kept sitting there and crouching against the table, etc, and apparently wound up giving Phil a headache:

` ...Actually, I think that must have been a joke. He was awfully tired....

` Of course, it was very difficult to draw him at the time, because we were in the car and the bumps in the road kept jarring my pencil each second or so....

` Seriously, though, the boy had fallen asleep! I think it was because he'd been sleep-deprived....

` When he had woken up, apparently, he tried to teach me algebra - something that an eighteen-year-old me had yet to be taught, sad to say!

` Well, I didn't get it then, though I at least understand the concept now. All I need to memorize now is the formula for getting the answer and I'm set!
` Anywho, those are my lame old sketches for today! Don't you feel special now? I'd better go, anyway - I think I need to go do some chores.

` Attention: The rest of my pencil sketches continue on this blog, along with much else!

Violence Against Dexter!! A little.

` Yes, I'm still at it. You haven't seen the last of my sketches from when I was... how old was I? Eighteen? Last we left off I was...

` It was ugly and scary. I don't know what I was thinking. Well, in order to combat my Dexteriousness, I began to make an army. Partly, just creatures from Dexter's Lab, but still....

` As Cap'n Namby-Pamby suggests, they are his best minions.
` Ever.
` Most of my army of creatures had nothing to do with Dexter, though many did. Most of them took up large chunks of pages, or even entire overspreads.
` However, most of them are also too hideous for mortal men to lay eyes upon.
` Nevertheless, I have a few non-Dexter drawings for your enjoyment.
` Now, as for those inspired by things I saw on Dexter's Laboratory.... Who can forget Monkey, from the backup segment The Justice Friends. Major Glory, Val Hallen and the Infraggable Krunk were the main characters, to be sure, and Monkey was... a monkey.
` With super powers.

` ...I thought it was a little bit strange that he had a relationship with Agent Honeydew. 'Cause she was a human. (Also Dexter has turned into a hobbit, apparently, and is on a dating show....)

` You may be amused to know, if you were not aware, that monkey's archnemesis was named 'Quackor'.

` Quackor was very ridiculous. More ridiculous than whatever in the hell Dexter is doing at the bottom there in his Star Trek getup.
` I came up with a dragon character, myself.... He was basically very good at flying around and making a pest out of himself.

` In fact, one time, he tried to eat Dexter for impersonating him.

` I was tempted to make a fourth drawing where Dexter's mom says; "You're not wearing any skin!" But the thought was too gory. And not cute. At all.
` Unbeknownst to Monkey and Quackor, however, the dragon had an alter ego called 'Drakor'. He's not on the good side or the bad side; he's on the supply side.

` And that is true evil, my friends! Well, Dexter's robot or mech or whatever that thing is was no good at retaliating against Drakor. It just kinda stood there...

` And then, some drawings from the future intruded and a small blank space was populated by tiny sketches of Gourdy the Pencil-Drawn YurkTM.

` Never mind what the project was all about. Yooou saaaw nothing!
` A little later on we come to an elephant bird or something and Dexter's new look - which earned him confusion with Action Hank. Beardiness is next to Manliness, I guess....

` Last but not least, this is Charlie. He's a Chupacrabra. Apparently, the whole Chupacabra thing can be explained by Dexter's great need to terrorize his sister.

` Unfortunately, it was no match for... the... real? Chupacrabra? Well, whatever.... I'm sure there's some reasonable explanation for this.

` ...Maybe its name is ChupaKubrick? I like that name.
` Well, it's time for me to go night-night. I'd better go to bed. Byeeeee.

Gene Duplication: A source of intellect?

` According to an article called Multiple copies of a mystery gene may make us human by Erika Check, Published online: 31 August 2006; | doi:10.1038/news060828-5....

` ...Nobody yet knows what the gene in question does, exactly, but thanks to genome sequencing, what researchers do know is that humans have more copies of it than chimps as well as macaques, rats and mice.
` All that is known for sure is that it makes a protein that is found in the human brain. Perhaps this is part of the reason why we're so damn smart!

"This really is a remarkable discovery," says Thomas Insel, director of the US National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland, which was not involved in the research and did not fund it. "People are going to argue about it and be fascinated by this, because it takes us in a couple of directions we haven't really been in before."
` By comparing the DNA of primates with more distantly-related mammals, the researchers are slowly figuring out what makes primates - and humans! - unique!
` It seems nowadays that the numbers of copies of a particular gene is an important source of variation that natural selection works with, in addition to the mutations within genes.
` Looking for such repeats, James Sikela at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, Aurora, discovered a gene that, in humans, is copied 212 times whereas chimps have only 37 copies and monkeys have only 30. Mice and rats only have a singly copy.
` This gene codes for a piece of protein known as DUF1220, which is found in many places in the human body, including the brain's neurons.
` Perhaps it has something to do with brain function? That would make sense, considering that we use our brains for more tasks than chimps do, chimps more than monkeys, and monkeys more than small rodents.
` So, how could anyone find out whether or not this is true? With mice, you can just knock out genes to tell what they do. ...But you can't do that with primates.
"These genes may be very good candidates to be involved in some type of cognitive function, and that's very tantalizing," Sikela says. "But that's about as far as we are right now."
` I'm sure someone will eventually figure out how true this most intuitive line of thinking is. In the meantime, we'll just have to do genetic experiments with primates the old-fashioned way....

` Cross-species breeding!

` Hey... it's early.

Crabby's Back!

` I thought for a few days that perhaps I'd lost one of my fav weird-humor blogs, Crabcake's Cowpie Field. So, I sent her an e-mail.

` Fortunately I was wrong. Apparently, it all started when Sal's blog was hijacked....

LOL! Pssst. It isn't deleted. It's gone missing.
ahhhhhhhhhhh ha ha ha! I was hot on the trail of
Sal's hi-jackers (just call me RobinHood Crab) and I
got too close. I got some threats so Milky and I
decided to hide the cowpie field to avoid problems for
a few days.

Well, now....we know she's there somewhere floating in
cyber space, but.....we can't quite find her. Yes,
it's ok to call us the 2 stooges. LMAO!

Anyway, I'm working on a new blog just in case. And
hopefully Milky will be able to retrieve the wonder
cowpie field.

Thanks, kiddo. It's awfully nice to be remembered.

Love,
you pal, Crabby

` Ha ha!! I hope that goes well. Tell me when/if blogging goes back to normal. ;)

SEE Quine

You got it! We'll keep searching. Meanwhile, if
you see it, send it home. LMAO!

` Luckily...

pssssssst! We found it! LMAO!

I'm gonna chain the blasted thing down now.

` Behold, it lives!

Legions of Dexters!

` This post was originally carefully plotted to come into existence on December 16, 2005 (just after my last one!), but my sketch posts all had to stop for a while because my hard drive was dying.
` I would have had them all up by now, but by the time I'd moved to a place without internet access, fixed my computer and discovered a way to upload pictures onto public internet stations, I had come back to my sketchbook image files to find that they were in the Adobe Photoshop format.

` That was a problem, as I didn't have Adobe Photoshop anymore. Or, more accurately, it had stopped working.
` Arrrrr! That's what happens when you be a pirate!
` This wouldn't have been a problem if I'd realized that there
was a set of pictures that I had set aside as jpegs specifically for editing and uploading. ...But I didn't until a couple of weeks ago.

` CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!?

` Without further ado, here is my belated next pencil sketch post! (...Unless, of course, you would like to go back to the first pencil sketches, which officially start here. ...With another bit before that here.

` At age eighteen I had begun to take a liking to Dexter's Laboratory. Why? Well, even four or five months after my dad had stolen every work I'd ever written (including my diaries and my entire computer), having no friends to speak of, I couldn't stop watching TV to try to dull the pain.
` Eventually, I began to draw pictures of strange cartoons I'd discovered, including Dexter, who is by far the mosty easily-drawn, and thus doubly distracting. (...There are also other explanations, but I won't get into that.)
` As you can see, this double-pager image symbolizes such things as the fact that I hate it when people are made to think they are crazy, and are determined to prove that they're not. ...And an advertisement to the same effect.
` (Ya might want to click on it.)

` ...And I bet you thought that jokes could only be told in words, didn't you? Would that be called a 'symbolization' of jokes?
` It also symbolizes the fact that I never use fixative out of fear that it will ruin the paper. ...Yeah. This is also doubly bad because many people have ruined a lot of my drawings by running their fingers over them! I'm serious! God, why do people do that!?!?? Can't they see they're smudging them all over? GRAAAAAHHH! What could I dooo?

` ...Where was I? Oh yes. So yes, that's Dexter. He has a lab, too, ergo the name Dexter's Laboratory. In fact, the lab itself is a source of much conflict in the series. (Boy, this picture is way-enlarged!)

` In fact, the episode that got me hooked was the first one I saw - Episode 138. It goes a little bit like this:
` "...In a more docile setting, more timid creatures dwell and work. It is here that the discovery of a creature living in secret concealment has occurred, in artifices not seen anywhere else in the world, a new class of creature, Dexterious homogenius. Although pale from lack of exposure to the sun, we call him Blackfoot.
` (Dexter is obsessively adjusting something with a wrench.)
` One thing has excluded our reasoning of knowledge of this habit. Perhaps it is a genetic defect.
` ...There is always an element of danger.
` BOOM!
` He runs around (on fire), high-pitched chanting, perhaps for rain, or good fortune, or to the spirits themselves, before finally collapsing in ecstasy.
` ...He likes to procreate (build), and grunts afterward in self-gratification. Amaaaazing.

` Unbeknownst to him, a more dangerous, cunning predator is nearby. Deedicus deedicus, which we have affectionately dubbed 'Slim', is a wizard of stealth. She uses a high-pitched squeal to disable him. With the speed and accuracy that Blackfoot had created it (a robot), Slim destroys it.

` The only time Blackfoot leaves his lair is to forage for food. ...He is knocked out of the running by the larger and more agile creatures. Yet it is common for smaller and weaker creatures to be left to pick over scraps. But to no avail, he returns defeated, to the sanctity and solitude of his lair.
` ...Hygeine is also important to this creature. Observe as he removes his outer protective covering to expose his more delicate inner covering. He captures another nearby creature, squeezes a substance fom his head, and works it into a fine lather. Ha! That tickles!
` Before we could observe this amazing event further, he discovers us. Realizing that we may lose track of him, we give chase.
` Notice the lower left corner.... His ear tag says 'BF1138'!

` Perhaps someday, we will find him again and explore even deper into the still mostly unknown world of... Blackfoot!

` ...Yeah. Is it any wonder that I was curious enough to keep watching? In fact, this habit went on for almost two whole months! It's sad. I was so bad at killing the pain in any other way that I'd become a Dexter Junkie!!
` Argh!
` As you have probably surmised, Dexter has a sister whose name is Dee Dee. Her talent is being annoying and cute. Nevertheless, she holds her own.

` Though Dee Dee is mentally inferior, Dexter observes that she nevertheless displays remarkably human-like behavior. ...Which apparently doesn't include gawking at things and going "Ooooh!"

` Dex is also quite gifted at talking down to her. For example: "I have been blessed weeth superior intellect and hyou have not... and I weep for hyou. But seence you are my seester, I shall have to aseest you on your quest to find a mind. Eet will be a difficult task, but I weel not stop unteel I fill that gaping hole in your head."
` Strange writers, those are.
` Unfortunately for Dexter, Dee Dee really likes to play in his lab, and so he must dismiss her insultingly;

` ...Or deter her in equally insulting ways, depending on the situation;

` In one episode, however, he put a new brain in Dee Dee's head - not that she really had any to begin with. In order to electrify the synapses, he generated a static charge by dragging his feet across the rug.... Unfortunately, her newfound intellect spelled disaster for him!
` See... the fact that his projects could backfire was supposed to be funny. Like the time he turned himself old and was mistaken for their grandpa!

` I wrote down this one piece of dialogue between Dexter and Dee Dee:
` "Thank you Da-da."
` "Dee dee."
` "Doo doo?"
` "Dee dee!"
` "Oh.... Thank you, Billy!"

` Even before I saw this... interesting cartoon, I knew I wanted to have a secret lab like Dexter's, with a sentient computer and everything! ...Even if the computer was belligerant from time to time.

` And, like Dexter (and Invader Zim, for that matter), I've always been really freaked out by things like the craziness that can be found at Chuck E. Cheese - despite my never having been to one (thank soup!).

` Don'tcha love his use of calculations? I put that in there, actually, because I like doing that a bunch. Similarly, he is careful to figure out his chances of being injured if he goes outside and plays sports.

` Unfortunately, sometimes he must put those calculations to the test....

` And, have you noticed some physical characteristic about him that makes no sense at all?

` That's right - his glasses follow the edges of his eyes! Why is that!!!

` Remarkably (or not), it makes no sense at all!

` Why are cartoons like that?
` What is the logic?
` How does it fit into cartoon laws of physics?

` In any case, I'm sure he gets it from his dad....

` Now, some of you may think of me - at least, me six years ago - as insane or obsessive for filling so much of my sketchbook with images of this show.
` Not so.
` Of course, cartoons are much easier to draw than other shows, which is good because you only get to view a given picture a couple of times, and under these conditions I have not been nearly as successful at drawing what I see. No, not even with nature programs! (Late Night talk shows, maybe, because people tend to stay put.)
` On top of that, when you actually see them in real life, you realize that these pictures are actually quite small. Hence, I was able to fit a bunch on one page, along with a lot of other drawings, which are pending.
` Yes, there were some other drawings I kept myself busy with as well as writing down some of the bizarre satirical dialogue from the show. This has got to be the craziest:
` "Say, puppet Pal Clem, you look sexy in your puppet pal jeans."
` "Thanks puppet pal Mitch, you sure look sexy in your puppet pal jeans."

` That's... just... wrong!!

` Gee, Dexter sure looks miserable in many of these drawings. To be sure, he's had more fun at Amish Camp....

` Bwaaa haaaaa!!!

` And now, the end theme, just for you:

` Enter at your own peril... past the vaulted door. Where impossible things may happen that the world's never seen before...
` In Dexter's LAB'ra-to-ry!
` Lives the smartest boy, you've ever SEEN!
` But Dee Dee blows his experiments, to smitheREENS!
` There is gloom and doom while things go boom....
` In Dexter's LAAAB!

` Fin.
