What the hell?

` I lured TallGuy over here to open my computer case today. I feel almost stupid... there's a latch on the top! That's all I had to do! Push in this black part on the top and then pull the side of the case up! (I thought it slid backwards, see....)
` Well, there wasn't much dust in there, so the problem might be heat-related or power related, so perhaps I need a new power supply. Or, maybe I just need some other new part. Or maybe my problems since I got the UPS have been caused by the external hard drive taking up too much power. In any case, I have kept my external hard drive turned off.
` Here's the weird part - I backed up my entire hard drive on the external hard drive and turned the external one off. A few days later, I find that my Mozilla Firefox bookmarks are gone! All of them! So, I turn my external hard drive on and activate the backup copy of Mozilla Firefox, right?
` There's no bookmarks there, either!
` WTF?! The external drive wasn't even turned on, much less backing up my hard drive, so what the hell is going on here? ...Or, did clicking Mozilla Firefox exe just start up my original one? They don't look the same, so I don't think so!
` ...How is that possible?!?!?

` In any case, my computer is tentatively working, so yay for that! I'll upload some more photos right away!

I believe your computer is suffering from what is commonly called 'I've had enough and what to be laid to rest on a garbage pile' syndrome. It's an incurable disease but the release from all this mechanoid world is incredible. It will feel no pain after the initial hurl out of the window from a speeding vehicle, the several somersaults into the curb and the sudden whack onto the sidewalk. It should be disorientated enough to not be able to find its way home. I think!

` Thank you, T Dworsky, and Gareth, your supposition possible; my computer's a 2002 model! It seems to still work, however.

` *crosses fingers*

` BTW, I'm almost done with the next post. I just haven't gotten around to getting it 100% finished because of constant homework.

I've seen this before, but only on computers that are attached to a domain. What happened was that the user (OS) profile for the user was rendered inoperable by some fluke, and the computer (OS) created another profile with a similar name like this - username.domain

You can check to see if this has happened by looking in the c:\documents and settings\ folder to see if there is another folder created which closely resembles the one created for your primary user.

If there are two profiles that closely resemble each other you should be able to copy and paste the favorites/desktop/my documents into the other profile folder.

wow. a-ron, good thing you haven't switched over to the dark side. That sounded complicated...

What do you mean by the 'dark side' Cas? I assume you mean macintosh. When a primary macintosh profile gets corrupted (which has happened to me before) it renders the computer completely inoperable barring a reinstallation of the OS.

OR, we could all switch to Linux and be happy :)
